Chris -- I haven't really fished it yet. Tied one last year and forgot about it, and then remembered it and cranked out a few more. It will definitely not sink very fast without weight. The back material tied Kinky Muddler style is dense enough for it to sink slowly, and bucktail itself is relatively bouyant. Of course that big 6/0 hook will weight it down somewhat, but if you scale it down some to 4-6 inches, and use an appropriated sized 1/0-3/0 hook, it should kind of hover in that top few feet. I'm very surprised that anyone uses big flies for Specks -- I thought they were more about the smaller baitfish and crustaceans. Out here, stripers and blues sometimes (but definitely not always) like big patterns ... until they becomes selective to tiny baits! Might tie some up for pike fishing too.
