I'm pretty sure the banana superstition originated in Hawaii . My dad, who was an avid fisherman in Hawaii, said that bananas are associated with monkeys, and when you take bananas with you on fishing trips, the fish will make a monkey out of you. A few years ago at Henry's Lake, Idaho, some fishing buddies, California guys, never heard of this superstition or believed in it, took bananas out on the lake . Their engine quit on them in a far corner of the lake and had to be towed in. That evening the rest of the bunch was in the trash can.
On another occasion at the Ruby Marsh in Nevada, somebody slipped a banana jn the back pocket of my vest. I carried it with me all day and had a poor day fishing. In Hawaii, you don't dare get on somebody's boat with bananas.
