I often use a 5wt for bass and panfish and use a 7wt SA Bass Bug taper or 7wt SA GPX line. The four 5wt rods that I use are a Sage FLi, Redington FSF, Redington Crosswater, and a custom glass rod of unknown blank. The 7wt line works great on all four rods for short to medium range (50ft including leader) casting. I upline by two often when casting bulky topwater since the added mass of the line helps with quickly loading the rod and carrying the bug through the air. I have cast the 5wt BVK quite a bit and fished it some and though I haven't lined it with a 7wt floater I have used a 200gr sinking line. It will do just fine with a 6 or 7 bass bug taper.
