If you are backpacking and in danger of a lightning strike, your safest option would be in a grove of small trees. Smaller than the average trees in the area. Dont seek shelter under a solitary tree of any size and dont seek shelter under a grove of large trees. Like Doug said, ditch your pack that may have conductive elements. Make yourself low with your feet on the ground within the grove of trees. If you are on high ground and can quickly get to a small ravine or lower ground, do it. Dont lean on or sit against any tree. Then pray!
