It has never been entirely clear to me how to avoid a lightning strike - you are not supposed to stay under trees or be out on flat ground where you are the highest point. This article says "The only safe places to be during a thunderstorm are in a building with four walls and a roof or in a car."

so if you encounter lightning on a backpacking trip or if you run into
a storm while on a big lake, you are out of luck? Help?

Thanks,
Steve
