The only physical requirement for a rod to cast accurately is that it cast along the same axis every time, which a rod will do unless the grips, the guides, or the ferrules have come loose. A competent fly caster must constantly compensate for differences in the plane of the rod from cast to cast and for changes in the wind. A competent fly caster will quickly and instinctively compensate for a consistent small deviation of the line's path from perfect agreement with the rod's axis. These days the majority of factory and custom rod makers ignore the spine(s) in the rods they build.
