I have had a lot of success with black, egg-sucking leech, particularly the articulated version. The Clousers mentioned here sound very good and I will be tying some for my upcoming Sept. trip to SE AK. The adrenalin really gets up when I think about fishing Spankers in tidal water where the fish are bright and hot. Spankers float in the surface film and are retrieved to produce a little V wake. Soon a very big V wake appears behind the fly and as it overtakes your offering you can see the white of an opening mouth. Then, hang on.
I'll be fishing water that requires ankle to thigh deep wading and using a #8 outfit with a bass bug type floating line for the Spankers and sub-surface flies with sink tip for the deeper spots though there are not many.
