I was one of a few lucky ones chosen to try out the new Redington Vapen Red fly rod - Redington's new top rod.

I've posted the Redington news release on the What's Hot/New Blog so you can check out the details if you wish.

The rod I've got is an 8-weight which is my current favorite size for stripers and similar species. Other Redington rods I have and like very much are the Predator and the Link - the Link previously Redington's premier rod.

Well, I have to say that the Vapen Red is now my favorite of the three. It's a very light, fast and strong stick that doesn't feel like a beast. It feels in my hand more like a six or even a seven-weight but fires the 28-feet of RIO Custom Cut T-14 like a much bigger stick, with incredible ease. "Effortless" doesn't suffice. The word "Vapen" means weapon in Swedish - and this rod is a weapon indeed - you don't cast it, you fire it.

As I've long said, it's very hard to find a bad rod these days; and there are a lot of exceptional rods. This is one of them.

It's a very good looking stick, a sparkling sort of charcoal with a very minuscule red trim. The blazing red Power Grip, however, does catch your eye. I'm not sure I like that much glaring red but I'm sure someone will love it. What I do like about the Power Grip material over the reconstituted cork is how comfortable it feels. It won't become slippery when wet or coated with fish slime and I don't think I'll be getting any blisters even after hours of casting this rod. I like the Power Grip material and I hope they put it on other Redington rods too.

I am going to line the rod with a floater, both the rated line weight and one-up. I know the rod will fire both with ease and proficiency.

OK, I didn't purchase this rod and Redington is a sponsor; but like I've said many times before: I don't BS when it comes to fly gear and if I don't have something good to say about something, I don't say anything at all. When it comes to the new Redington Vapen Red, I've nothing but good things to say about it.

Need a new rod - a high performance rod - for under $400, consider the Redington Vapen Red at $349.99
