Since poppers are surface flies it has to be remembered that a fish looking, up is seeing things, like very dark, black, and when it gets close enough to it on the surface it actually seeing it dual mode, both eyes close up.
I suggest you get in the water and look up at the popper on the surface at various depths. What you see is similar to what the fish sees, and its the same for every animal on the planet. Just looking right at a big circle of light from the sun, and everything is in contrast.
