|The plan is to set up over sand, well up-current of the patch and chum up a yellow tail bite. That will keep my wife busy trying to catch yellowtail. And maybe draw some bigger fish out over the sand. Gags and Blacks have to be over 24" to keep and I have no illusions about fighting them over the rocks, even with a 12wt|
Meanwhile I'll drop some chum to the bottom using the hawaiian palu bag trick. I'm going to using flys that I can work slowly on the bottom like a large merkin style crab and and a crawdad pattern upsized to look like a tiny lobster. That new J. King squid pattern on a keel weighted jig hook would be about perfect. I'm thinking I can drag and reel, in short slow pulls, across the bottom and stay on the reel the whole time. I've caught Gags/Blacks on conventional gear in the past and their stomach contents have betrayed a fondness for crustaceans.
And if that doesn't work, I've got a box of all the usual Blantonville suspects to throw at them too.
Hey, what could possibly go wrong ?
It's something new. I'm looking forward to it. If I get my butt kicked, I'll just break out the conventional gear, head out to the edge, and find Mama a grouper. Then I can get back to chasing Tarpon.
