|I'm trying out adding rattles to some of my striper flies. I'm curious about what the accepted practice is. It seems that there are 3 possibilities.|
1. Tie the rattle on the hook shank on the same side as the hook point.
2. Tie the rattle on the hook shank opposite the point.
3. Tie the rattle in a tube that extends off the back of the hook.
Any thoughts about the best positioning would be appreciated. I've tried all 3, but haven't fished them. #1 reduces the hook gap. #2 would seem to lead to rattle breakage. #3 seems like the cleanest way to go.
Also, any thoughts about the type of rattle, or sources?
