One year at Christmas Island I used an SA trout reel with a clicker drag the entire week. I would say it would have been a size 7/8 in size, maybe smaller. It worked great and I had a ball using it. I never felt under-gunned. Of course I tossed the reel in the trash when I left because the salt was chewing away at the aluminum frame. It wasn't an anodized reel. You really don't need a big gun for bonefish.
That said, if there are GTs; jacks and permit and others with shoulders around that might eat a bonefish fly or a crab fly - I'd like a bigger reel just to be sure I could handle them.
