I just returned from a hosted trip to Guanaja about three weeks ago. Myself and my co-host headed down early to pre fish for a few days in Roatan near West End. Unfortunatley the weather gods didn't want us fishing the first few days.
Our plan was to DIY for a day, and fish with a guide for a day before we flew to Guanaja (next island over).
Overall, there wasn't much DIY around West End. Also keep in mind there are almost no bones (for the most part) in Roatan, but there are tons of permit! My advice would be to contact Greg Baldwin at firstname.lastname@example.org. Tell him I sent you.
Greg helps manage Fly Fish Guanaja Lodge were we hosted our clients, but is also one of the main guides on Roatan. If he can't guide you, he can put you in touch with his guys. I would highly reccomend a guide for there, even if just for a day. The DIY thing would be pertty difficult for most of the island. But feel free to ask Greg, he can fill you in on everything over there!
The pics are from our trip to Guanaja, but like I said, Roatan is permit heaven!
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
