At what time does it become public "intellectual property" and how long does it remain "private intellectual property? I'm being rhetorical, of course...
I firmly believe that if you don't want a bunch of folks to know something, you don't tell anyone about it. The same goes for good fishing spots. Don't take someone there and then swear them to secrecy. It simply doesn't work. Lots of good anglers have shown me something new over the years and I've never felt I needed to ask permission to pass it forward. Likewise I've educated a few anglers myself and I certainly hope they passed it on if they felt it was worth sharing.
That said, I do get it about how tough the fishing has become in the Keys. It was already tough back in the 80s and early 90s when I was fishing the Keys every year with Captain Ray Fecher (and others). Yes, guides do keep their working tactics close to the vest; or share it with only a few they network with - and they do network; trust me on that. We all do, with few exceptions. And please... don't tell me you don't want to give it up because you don't want to deprive me of the thrill and satisfaction of discovering [it] all by myself. That is the most condescending and patronizing comment I've ever heard. Just say you're not telling and stick to it!
