Cross-reference charts show that several manufacturers market hooks with the same bends, barbs, shank lengths, eyes, points, wire diameters, and corrosion safeguards. So what distinguishes an "excellent" hook from the others?

It could be tensile strength, or resistance to fracture, or sharpness out of the box, or ability to keep a sharp point, or ease and effectiveness of resharpening. Each of these "excellent" qualities can be determined by tests which can be verified. So why must we rely upon ad claims and strictly anecdotal reports to select the most basic piece of gear in our outfit ?
