I feel the longer the rod, the longer head it will handle nicely. I find heads between 35-40' to be ideal up to about 12' rods. I don't normally use anything longer that that these days, but when I did the longer heads worked fine. There's lot of discussion going on in the NE these days about the length of the two-handers for surf/beach fishing. You have guys that say they use a 15' rod only due to the fact that suitable 20' rods aren't available. In my experience, I've found anything longer than about 12 1/2' to offer too many issues, like landing fish for instance. I've worked out 15' rods, several of them in fact, on my lawn, and I'm gassed after about an hour of practice casting. 11'-12' seems the best compromise for me. Hence the 35'-38' heads from Beulah (though we were just told that the Serum was a tad shorter) and standard OB and the old Airflo 40+ Beach line.
