We'll need to agree to disagree on head length. No question the high dunes and people walking on the beach can be a problem. I solve that by trying to fish where they ain't. However, the longer heads cast so much smoother and longer for me that they're worth the tradeoff. I know guys who surf fish with a 22' Compact Skagit head. They do quite well, actually, but truthfully it's mostly due to minimal casting skills. Eventually you get to the point where it's not a whole lot different than casting a decent sized plug with gear.
Actually, I don't have a 8/9. I have a 7/8 and a 9/10. I pointed that out in my first post, but it's likely been long forgotten.
I've used floaters on the NorthEast coast and don't like them, especially from the beach. The wave action effects the line too much, and the thicker line is tougher to cast into the almost constant wind.
I'll need to measure my Serum again. Or find the e-mail I got from James. I was sure he said the head was 39', but I might very well be wrong on that.
