The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is the largest member of the minnow family.
I "sight fished" carp with a stick bow-and-arrow for decades before I took one on a fly. I shot a carp 46" long while working for a fisheries research project on Oneida Lake N.Y. (removing the operculum is necessary to determine the age and growth rate of carp).
I got into sight fishing redfish in the Mosquito Lagoon ten years ago. Depending upon the depth of water and the time of year I judge redfish to be at least as spooky as carp, and not much less fussy about fly type or presentation.
