The primary function of a fly vise is to hold a hook securely without fracturing the steel in the hook bend. Art Flick offered a tip: cut a tiny rectangle from a piece of pasteboard (like a cereal box), fold it over the hook bend, and close the vise over the pasteboard enfolding the hook.. The hook will be subjected to a minimum of leveraged pressure and the hook will NOT move. Art Flick tied beautiful flies on an unremarkable vise using this method.
