I am sure rod manufacturers do often know why their rods break. They most likely have a very good idea what their quality control allows to slip through. It could be a very small number of rods that are actually factory defects. They most likely know with great precision about their rods made in the USA. Not sure they have as tight of control with rods made in Asia.

While the Clouser Deep Minnow certainly has been responsible for nicking and later breaking some fly rods, I think it gets blamed for far more breaks than the fly ever causes. When I first started fly casting with weighted flies, I hit the rod fairly often, but I quickly learned. I cannot remember the last time a Clouser hit one of my rods.

One thing for sure is that I prefer a liberal warranty from the manufacturer, even though I have to pay for it up front. The last thing I want to do when I get home from a trip with a broken fly rod is argue over how it broke. Sometimes I know and sometimes I do not.
