Steve,.... I tied up a squid pattern using the same idea with the intent to use it in Baja. Didn't use it as I was concerned that the eye (small) end of the shank would open up on large powerful fish. The wire just looks like it's to narrow in diameter to me.

I don't have anything to support that conclusion; just worry.... I have made up wire leaders using spinner wire and making the larger loop on both ends. Haven't used it in the salt, yet....
