It wasn't my 8 wt rod so I don't have a clear idea of the backing. I was in Kaneohe Bay where threre's no coral. I cranked the drag all the way at the end because there wasn't much Dacron left. If it was was 200 I'd not be surprised but it was the end because I saw black and got very nervous. I know when I packed for Xmas isle, I went for 450 yds of gel spun based on this experience. BTW a 5 wt is a heck of rod for that fish you caught.
