You know how it goes with hot tarpon flies - they work for awhile then they become just another OK tarpon fly.
Captain Ray swore me (and his other clients) to secrecy and the fly was pretty deadly for 5 or 6 seasons and then it stopped working as well. Probably from too many people using it or something similar. I know Steve Huff was using a very similar pattern during the same time period.
When Bus Bergmann asked about the fly at dinner the evening following that fantastic day, I told him I couldn't tell him because of my promise to Ray. Well Bus understood that since he was a guide himself. About six seasons later, when the fly cooled down, I asked Ray if I could write about it in my fly-fishing column in Sport Fishing Magazine. With Ray's approval I did. Man did Bus come unglued when he read the column. He was upset because I wouldn't show him the fly when he asked about it but later wrote an article about it in a National magazine.
He calmed down when I told him the fly wasn't nearly as hot anymore. That said though, It's still a pattern I'd have in my Keys fly selection.
I'll shoot a photo and post it. It's really a simple fly.
