|This weekend was youth weekend for kids a week before spring gobbler season. I know this has little to do with fly fishing but turkeys have feather and that's close enough for me. Four of my grandsons between the ages of 8 and 11 spent the weekend with their dads and grandfather, that's me, hunting gobblers. One of my great passions in life aside from fly rodding for poons is calling turkeys.|
At the end of the weekend three of the boys who have not yet killed their gobblers did so, Two of them took birds that we called up less than 15 feet off the barrel. Two birds weight 20 lbs and one was 18.
I just got home and am worn down to a nub but wanted to share my joy for having the opportunity to be involved.
The last one to harvest his bird was Wyatt who hunted like a man with me. Hes nine. We walked through the woods each day with high expectations but to no avail. Finally we found a gobbler and it took over an hour of calling to bring him in so Wyatt could shoot his first bird. He made a great shot with his 20 gauge and we danced around for fifteen minutes celebrating his success.
At the end of the day I am still celebrating and counting my blessings for having the health and opportunity to do this.
I realize this is off the subject but really wanted to share this with all of you.
