I am not sure of the specific manufacturing process, but I did made a discovery a few years back when I ordered some leaders and tippet spools. The manufacturing process for tapered leaders actually weakens the breaking strength, so a 5X tapered leader (3.2 lb) is weaker than 5X tippet (4.75 lb) that has the same diameter. I don't think is explained to most people because I think the majority of fly shops are selling a beginner or novice a 5X leader along with a 5X tippet spool and instructing them to connect them with a blood or surgeons knot. It seems more logical to use a 4X leader and connect 5X tippet to that. I just thought I would share in case others were in the dark like I was regarding breaking strength of these materials.
