One of the guides at Picacho Lodge last year boasted of the salmon in the Puerto Varas area as well. They were mostly targeted by conventional spin gear clients. He went as far as sending photos of the salmon they had targeted with fly rods. The Picacho River had salmon, but the holes were so deep and tinted just enough not to see them as we passed by on our runs every morning. We took Al's word for it that they were there. Targeting salmon had been off limits to the fly clientele because of they were in the deeper holes. The water dropped four feet when the rains finally stopped.
On an side, I still recall the smolts jumping completely out of the water all along the drip line of over hanging trees after the rains had passed. Huw is correct in his description of the mountains. They jutted straight up. I am ready to go back.
