Peter, correct me if I'm wrong on this, but your initial post had me thinking you were there during Mardi Gras and/or the Super Bowl. If so, or even a week on either side of those events, might have been the major contributor to the outrageous car rental and airline rates. My buddies specifically tried to avoid that period, but due to weather on the East Coast at their departure time, they had issues. One had to stay overnight and couldn't even find a place to stay without heading well away from the airport and paying close to $300.00 simply for a place to crash.
