|I just received my copy of Hal Janssen's long awaited book, Stillwater Fly-Fishing Secrets. I obviously haven't had a chance to read it; in fact I've only had a few minutes to give it a cursory look through after reading the Forward written by Russ Chatham.|
Russ pretty much sums it up in his usual style ranging from eloquent to down-right in-your-face blunt and even terse. But it's all to make his point that neither Hal or his book is BS. Both are the real deal. He couldn't be more spot on!
I'm so impressed with what I've seen and read so far that I can say without having read the book in its entirety, that if you are a serious trout angler or want to take your game to a level beyond the entry point - to excel at stillwater trout fishing, you need to have a copy of this well-written, brilliantly illustrated and organized book. I've seen nothing better in my 50-plus years of fly-fishing and reading about it.
I rarely do book reports; it's not my thing. I live in a glass house and as a writer myself, one who could stand a lot of improvement, I'll be the last one to throw a critical stone... But I can say based on what I know about Hal, and I've known him since the 60s, he doesn't do anything half-assed. He sure didn't let down a microbe on this project.
I can't wait to get deeper into his book. I've always loved stillwater trout fishing; much more so than stream and river fishing. I'm only fair at the game though. However, I know once I devour this book I ought to be a helluva lot better at it. I know I will be.
It has 17 chapters ranging from Understanding Stillwater to boats and floating devices. EVERTHING from entomology through Ecosystems, weather and vegetation is covered and superbly illustrated by Hal himself. Hal is a remarkably good artist in so many ways and it comes through in this book. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book.
Hal will be at the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton this weekend and if I were you, I'd stop by and pick up a copy of Stillwater Fly-Fishing Secrets from Hal - while they last - because I have a feeling they won't last long.
You won't be at the show - you probably can order one direct from:
Hal Janssen Company
P.O. Box 272
Forest Ranch, CA 95942
Regardless of where in the world you fish for stillwater trout, you should have a copy of this incredible work by Hal Janssen.
I'll be there to have Hal inscribe my copy for sure.
Great job Hal - I'm really proud of you on all counts; and you really did yourself proud with this book. Congrats!
