Steve — At Michael's Handicraft store I purchased a rectangular piece of black sponge foam about 2 inches thick and larger than the outside edge of the flat bed scanner. Then I removed the intersection with a knife—leaving what looked like a picture frame. Leave the scanner door up, lay the frame so none is on the glass—lay your back ground on top the foam form. Hope that helps.

(For backgrounds, Lefty mentioned elsewhere that he glues cardboard on the back of Michael's thin foam sheets of different colors).
