Actually I have "NEVER" been hassled personally going through customs going into Loreto, and I promise you I have hit my share of "red lights" going through the customs line. I think if this practice of ripping the fishing tourist off continues. It would certainly hurt what they have left of the fishing trade, however it's Mexico why should we expect anything better?
I really do think there is some law about how many rods (4) you can take into Mexico, and if you exceed it you must pay some kind of tax? However I don't really think the "tax" money should be paid to a few slime balls who are just ripping you off. If I had to pay, I would go to the airline counter and pay the proper authorities, not the slime balls in the bathroom.
When my buddies and I go to Loreto, we often put different items in each others bags for weight savings, sure one guy might have 6 rods, and maybe the next guy will have two, so what?
I don't see any advantage to try and sell fly rods in Loreto. If I have a rod I didn't want, it would go on Ebay.
I also pay my guide's tip in CASH. I also take him to diner, and buy lots of beer.
