Jay,
Have you considered tying your big fly in sections, and then bonding the 2 pieces together with flexable tubing...
I use nylon 1/8" od tubing to tie on then use a 1/8" id tubing to weld the two pieces together with CA glue.
Easier that tying on an 8" mandrel.
as for color... I like chartreuse and hot pink.... and lotsa flash hanging out the back.
