Screw-in studs for wading boots

I am going to making a trip to the American River for steelhead in two weeks. My wading boots only have felt. Do I need to have screw-in metal studs? If so, can someone explain why one would need those such as the $40 Simms® Hard Bite Wading Boot Studs versus plain old sheet metal screws?
