I have always susbcribed to the trigger point theory,,,, that is some part of the fly draws attention to the fly and "triggers" the fish's predatory instinct to strike it.

I believe the best "impressionistic flies" incorporate and enhance one or more of these triggers. Triggers could be things like flash (whether subtle or bold),,,, movement / behavior of the fly,,,, color and size of the fly,,,,, enhanced body parts (ie. Claws, eyes and rubber legs),,, and so on.
