I'm no expert on permit based on personal experience; but I sure have spent much time speaking at length about it guys like Del Brown and other notables. Most I know find "impressionist" crab flies much more productive than rubber or plastic exact imitations. This is one reason why the Merkin and its cousins have always worked so well.

There's always exceptions but I'll put my money on the good impressionistic crabs.
