Ditto on Carl Richards. He wrote a little-known book on designing flies "Prey: Designing and Tying New Imitations of Fresh and Saltwater Forage Foods", 2002, that is cool. He stressed studying the prey you are trying to
imitate - imagine that!!! - he collected lots of bugs and forage and kept
them in aquaria or took lots of pics -
and going from there. He describes latex methods in that book.
