Back in the 80s when I was fishing the Fishing International C&R tarpon tournaments out of Sugar Loaf Lodge, Frank Bertaina came up with the idea of using plastic buttons to fashion crab bodies out of. I thought it was a great idea and I started playing around with all sorts of large and smaller buttons that I ground into various crab shapes. I cut a hook groove and also short grooves on the under side to anchor the hook and the rubber legs; the same for the eyes.

I actually came up with some very nice looking crab flies made from various buttons. I thought I still had a few of those left but I'll be damned if I can find them. I know they worked pretty well on goldens and cobia when I was in Australia - almost as well as the Merkin. I may have used up what I had left from those Keys days on Gulf of Carpentaria critters. Never did catch a permit on one of them though. I just didn't fish for permit much.

Anyhow, it's an idea that works if someone wants to give buttons a try. It's easy to grind them to shape and to attach legs and eyes with epoxy or the UV stuff. I got mine at the craft and millinery stores.

Sorry, no photos.
