A good part of the attraction is that the buyer can avoid paying sales tax. Most (all?) on-line sales do not involve collecting sales tax unless the seller has a physical presence in the state where the buyer is located. In cross state transactions, BUYERS are suppose to pay a "use" (vs. "sales") tax to the state, but that is rarely done and difficult for the state to track. It's been said that the loss of sales tax ("revenue"?) is part of the reason that many of our states are in financial trouble.
