Dan... I'm by far NOT an expert when it comes to marine engines, but on my boat with an old 90 HP Merc, the manual says the max RPM at full tilt should be around 4500 and that higher or lower can affect the life of the engine. Have you looked at your manual to see what the optimum max RPM for your motor is (was?). Being able to hit 6K seems pretty high to me, but then again... I'm only familiar with older engines.

Sounds like your engine may have become over heated and tweaked the head gasket. Maybe a temporarily plugged intake etc.?

Sorry to hear of your loss. Having to replace a marine engine is a painful experience... Greg
