Hey Phil,

Not sure what silver spheres you are talking about. Check out the close-up photo of the fly. There you should see the fly head (this is probably the ping pong ball you refer to), the snap swivel and a short length of the bite tippet.

You are right - the snap swivel is heavy - not sure what they would test but they are huge and sturdy. They do help to sink the flies - but the main reason for their bulk is to accommodate big hooks and hold up against the in-close fighting tactics of a large musky. They spin and twist and put a lot of pressure on hardware.
