Striped bass and salmon abundance graphs below.

Maybe I'm not reading them right but it looks like the striped bass peaks (relatively speaking) in 2000 and the salmon keeps going up until 2002 (I remember that year they had over 800k returns on salmon). Doesn't look like the salmon population was noticeably effected by relatively high abundance of stripers in and leading up to 2000. Looks to me like the two migratory species fluctuate roughly together dependent probably on things like river flows, sea conditions and probably pumping (water transport regimes) in the delta and river, etc.
