You could easily follow that path and still the guide, lodge, travel agency, ect. could ( and have ) go belly up. So even if you deal direct with the service provider, there are no absolute guarantees.
I think the lesson to gained here, might have something to do with travel insurance.
Ever wonder what would happen to all of those warranty repair rods, reels, wader, on and on, that are in for repair or replacement, if one large manufacturer closed it's doors suddenly?
I'd be a lot more inclined to think that with the way some customers hoard or flat out forget about Gift Certificates. That with several decades of retail sales history, there's a strong chance that more could be lost from un-negotiated Gift Certificates and store credits than a single seasons booking deposits.
