I was reading the posts below and thought I would share some of the big flies I've been tying. Since Charlie's Airhead came out I have been in love with that fly. I wanted to tie my own flies like that but at that time there were no formal recipe available. I kind of knew how to tie it but did not want to widdle down dowels for a pattern for the hollow body. I came across some Bungee Braid and experimented with that material and this is the fly that I got. I used it towards the tail end of the striper season last fall but since then I have not had the opportunity to use it. It has great darting action, I think due to the rattle being tied to the rear of the hook. It's large (8-9 inches) and light (basically the weight of the hook and rattle) and has a round body that pushes water just like Charlie's fly. You could go larger but the Slinky Fiber and Steve Farrar Blend material I use is only 8-10 inches in length. I use thinned Shoe Goo for the adhering the fibers to the Bungee Braid. It is a very easy fly to tie and you don't need a turner for the Goo. WS [click here to display pictures] |
