Do you think manufacturers are "naive" to the fact that their products are being sold well below retail on eBay? Of course not. Almost 50 fly shops signed a letter that went to Sage, Simms, and Far Bank complaining about Red Truck's pricing practices. How have the manufacturers reacted: smiling quietly. As long as product goes out the door they are happy. . . that is their business. They aren't getting "fooled".

When Sage and Simms started selling to the big boxes there was much hoopla about them "deserting" their customer base. So what? I don't know of a single shop that has stopped carrying their products nor do I know a single angler who has stopped using their gear because of it. Unless you are a small shop owner, it is much to-do about nothing.

I would rather have Sage and Simms stay in business by putting their gear where today's consumers shop, than have them go belly up for fear of alienating their base. I feel for the small specialty shops, but that is the evolution of business. When I was a child in New York we had butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers (we even had a cobbler) all in the same neighborhood. For better or worse, times change.
