I use a set of clippers to cut them to the desired size then I file them or sand them on my belt sander to have a more favorable transition.I also use these weights when I am tying a large deep bellied Clouser style fly and I don't want to be limited to the available dumbbell style eyes.

I can totally see how your method of lead wrapped mono would be very versatile for precise weight adjustments,as well.Cheaper too!!!!!If you have that image of the weights I mentioned perhaps you could post it for me.

I have recently been using a light cured acrylic like CCG or Tufffleye to smooth out my lead wraps. I have even been painting them with fingernail polish at times. Makes for a great iridescent belly.
