|On the last leg of an Oregon Trip we had lunch at the Brown Trout in Dunsmuir, CA. Its adjacent gift shop has a unique tributary of the Upper Sacramento running under a floor grill in the 1920 building. Owner Robert Wallace assured me he often sees trout moving through the shop.|
After lunch we made our mandatory stop at the Ted Fay Fly Shop where Bob Grace and Steve Bertrand assured me that the 1475 cfs flow on July first was down to 420 cfs, the only thing missing were the fly fishers, and the fishing was excellent. Now that Joe Kimsey no longer ties, Bob was at the bench tying traditional Ted Fay Black Bomber tip flies. See photo.
Tom Chandler, Trout Underground Guru, is very concerned that now that the kill sections are not being planted, that
the wild trout will suffer overharvest. He feels that as long as there are kill areas with a 5-fish limit that rubber trout may be needed to satisfy the take. I completely agree with Tom that all but a small section of the magnificent Upper Sacramento River should be managed as a wild trout catch-and-release water. Sadly the political control of our fishery agencies probably makes that our pipe dream.
