Phil...Looking at "other" styles of rods, namely spin rods, one finds that they quite often have huge grain delivery windows. ie Load range.
I have a 100 dollar Shimano 9' composite graphite spin rod, Chinese made, with a load range of 20 to 60gms, like 308 to 925gns which in fly terms, is enormous.
If we related that to a 5# rod, with a GDE of 140 to 210gns, it would be 140 to 420gns and it would handle fly lines as high up as 13# and it would sling a full 5# DT line without a hitch.
I guess the question is, do we as fly anglers have funny ideas about rods and don't realise the ability of those rods to handle high loads. Or not????
