I find an 8 wt line on a 5 wt rod feels horrendous. No amount of pontification or theorizing can get around that simple fact. I have never found a single rod in my experience that feels good up lining by 3 wts regardless of manufacturer. In theory it may work...but it hasn't for me. Have you made it work Max? One of the reasons many of us fish is for the pure joy of it...and fly fishing is a lot of fun. The casting part of it, when done right, feels good and an 8 wt line on a 5 wt rod, in my experience, feels as much fun to me as sticking a 9 volt battery on my tongue over and over again. No fun but it can work, don't know why anyone who enjoys the pure essence of fly casting would want to do it but to each his/her own.
