Despite low temperatures and strong winds, for the past two weeks I have had some success fishing for shad on the Saint Johns river in Florida using a double taper sink tip line on an East Branch fly rod labeled "5 Weight." The first 30' of the DT line weighs 197 grains (borderline 8 wt.) but it casts and fishes beautifully, although I don't have to cast farther than 70 or 80 feet. Maybe the rod manufacturer suffered a misprint on the blank, or maybe the "5 wt." designation on fly rods is meant specifically for tournament distance casters.
