According to commentary on the Snopes site it is presumed real and is suspected to have came from the Fraser River in BC where 1.) it is legal to lift such fish from the water (as opposed to Oregon's Willamette R.) 2.) where it is common to take large sturgeon and pose for the "grip and grin" hero shot in the water with the fish.
