One of the best ideas I have seen in fly tying is sort of a bend back style and probably an old idea but Marcus turned me on to it recently. The idea is tying all the material in the front quarter inch of the hook right behind the eye on the inside of the hook (not on top) with the hook point UP. If you do that, you do not need to keel weight the hook and the material acts as a weed guard. It works great but will probably work better if you bent the eye up to take advantage of leverage on the hook up. A jig hook will accomplish the same thing but it's nice knowing that there is another way to do this.
